Super Bowl XLIV
Student News Net Print E-Mail

Feb. 7, 2010 - At 6 p.m. EST, the New Orleans Saints will try to bring its first ever Super Bowl championship trophy back to a city devastated by Hurricane Katrina in 2005. To get their hands on the trophy, they have to defeat Peyton Manning and the Colts.

THE STORIES behind Super Bowl XLIV are just - super. When Hurricane Katrina slammed into New Orleans in August 2005, the football stadium became the shelter of last resort for thousands of victims. The scene was difficult to watch. As days turned into weeks and then into years, volunteers from across the country poured into New Orleans to help residents recover from the natural disaster.

The Saints had to play the entire 2005 season outside of New Orleans. But when they did return to the city, loyal fans were waiting for them with open arms. The stadium once again was used for professional football. Drew Brees was brought in as the Saints quarterback in 2006. In a sense he has become the quarterback for the city as well. When the players are done practicing and playing, many of them volunteer their free time to work on projects around the city.

Archie Manning, former Saints quarterback from 1971-1981, is still very involved with the team. And oh yes, he is the father of Peyton Manning, the Colts quarterback who is considered one of the smartest quarterbacks in the NFL! And Archie has another son people know - Eli Manning, quarterback of the New York Giants. On any other day, Archie would be cheering for Peyton. Under Peyton's leadership, the Colts won Super Bowl XLI in 2007. And there are legions of fans in Indianapolis who want the trophy returned there.

So the Saints are the Word of the Day sentimental favorite but the Colts are just so talented. Even President Obama came out of the neutral zone and said he favored the Saints just slightly over the Colts because of what it would mean for the city. Hollywood could not have written a better script for a football game!
Enjoy!

Update (Feb. 8): The Saints did it! They are Super Bowl XLIV champions after defeating the Colts 31-17.
