Judy, SNN editor: Hello Mrs. Sweeney and Byrnedale 6th graders! I am following up from one question a student had about hyperventilating. In hyperventilation, the body cannot produce enough carbon dioxide to keep up with oxygen being inhaled. The body tries to compensate and that is when symptoms of hyperventilation can occur - dizziness, tingling in hands and feet and others. A common treatment is to hold a paper bag over the mouth so the carbon dioxide being exhaled can be used again by the body to increase levels of carbon dioxide.
